Your working space plays an essential role in productivity and mental preparation. Below I have shared a few tips I keep in mind for organising my work space. This is one of my building blocks, it serves as a safe familiar thought place I can revisit from time to time.
Eight tips to keep in mind for your work space:
Choose and organise your working space, whether you are working from home, in an office or in a coffee shop make the space work for you. While you may not have control over the surrounding environment you do have control over your immediate space.
Declutter your working space by keeping the most used and helpful items closed to you and storing less to little use items. Minimise distractions, wear headphones if there is too much noise, choose to go coffee shops or restaurants during off-peak times, and be selective with your stationery items.
Personalise your space with familiar items, or decorative pieces that compliment who you are. If your office is not based in one location, personalise the items you travel with like a notebook in your favourite colour, or a quirky pencil case.
Take screen breaks at least every 20 minutes by focusing on something else for a minute or two.
Have an on-the-go-bag that keeps all your essential items: chargers, devices, documents, extra notebooks, earphones and stationery. Ensure that you keep backups and carry an additional USB device.
Keep your space and devices clean, your digital bin and physical bin. Schedule regular clean-up and sanitising dates as germs spread easily especially through our electronic devices.
Use air fresheners, air purifiers, plants or open a window. Plants create a positive environment by refreshing the air and bringing a little bit of the outside inside. Keeping the air clean is a positive stimulant, if you can't have a plant, open a window or light some incense take a walk or stand outside for a few minutes.
Create a checklist, lists keep you on track allow you to work towards your goals and serve as great reminders.
