What's on your desk?

The environment you work in is so important, it plays a big role in influencing your state of mind. Different works spaces will speak to your different roles and identities, you need to be mindful that your workspace should compliment and cater to specific needs. Whether it's for something more creative, or practical ensure that the way you set up your workspace allows for the work you need to do to get done and does not distract you.

Your workspace works for you when it meets your needs; preference, function and purpose. Your workspaces reflects the mental space you are currently in, if you need something to speak to your logical and practical side, something minimalistic that exaggerates geometry would appeal to you more than something really expressive with a lot of layers, colour and more desk accessories.

While your desk can be aesthetically pleasing, design and style should not be used irresponsibly:

  • Some desks designs and arrangements may not be able to satisfy your work needs

  • If your dream desk does not fit the space, is not financially smart, or interrupts general living space think of compromising instead - opt for function.

  • If there is something in the way and could easily be knocked over, it should not be on your desk

  • Think of ways you can use small spaces for more than one function; if you do not have space for both a desk and dining room table get something that can function as both and be selective in your styling

  • If you do not have space for a desk or table in any form, try an invest in something you can fold away i.e. a laptop tray or any fold away tray.

  • When it comes to arranging items take the shape of the desk into consideration, and what different compartments are available - like drawers or shelves. Think less is more, if you have more space do not take that as an invitation to add more than is necessary. Rather, invest in alternative storage options if you need.

Tip: If you don't see nature from where you work take a 5-15min walk during your day to get some fresh air and recalibrate.

What should be on your desk?

Think of function first; what would you need to carry out your roles and responsibilities:

  • A diary, calendar or notebook

  • Laptop, iPad or working books

  • A sentimental item such as a photo-frame, a devotional, painting or drawing etc.

  • A plant

  • Essential stationery items

  • Storage item

The above are the basics for what the average person will need to ensure basic productivity. Anything added will be based on your preferences, aesthetic, additional needs that need to be met or storage availability.

I opted for a clean, minimal style, because most of my day is spent in front of my laptop.

May day-to-day is rather unpredictable and even my home space is a collection of memories, colours and layers. When it comes to workspace I don't want something that would be too distracting. And while I can work from anywhere (perks of a freelancer) – I'm talking seaside, cosy coffee shops and client offices – I do enjoy working from home.

Tip: Focusing on something that calms you stimulates focus and removes distractions that you cannot control such as traffic, estate gardening service or construction, people noise, busy office space and more. Try brown noise sounds or a calming worship playlist (my go-to).

On my desk:

  • Desk organisers: For files, stationery and handcare

  • A plant (that I forget to water)

  • My laptop, and earphones

  • My journal diary and devotional diary

  • Desk light (battery operated)

  • A coffee mug and coaster

  • My pair of glasses (that I forget to wear)

  • A candle
